Firstly, let me begin by stating that these tips are by no means the only tips for weight loss. But, if you can manage these four very important components in your weight loss program, they will help you on your way to a leaner and fitter body.
1) Build the Foundation
The first tip to beginning your weight loss journey is to change your Basal Metabolic Rate (the BMR). The BMR is the amount of energy (calories) your body uses in a resting state; most people starting a weight loss program have a very low BMR.
The idea then is to lift your BMR so that you are burning more calories even when resting. By raising your BMR, you will increase the amount of calories your body burns through the day; this helps your body to effectively reduce extra fat it has.
Probably the best way to raise your BMR is through weight training which adds muscle tissue to your body, it has been shown by many experts in fitness that lean muscle will help you to burn more fat each day by raising your BMR to a higher level.
Often, females shudder at the idea of adding muscle due to their fear of becoming "bulky." But it's a lot harder to add that kind of muscle mass for women than you think.
A little well toned muscle mass goes a long way toward achieving a leaner body, think models and actors, their personal trainers use weight training as a way to reduce their body fat, without making them look like body builders.
2) Specificity of Program
Do you think that any exercise program will do for weight loss? Simple not true. Just burning calories by walking 10 miles a day is not good enough. Whatever program you use must be designed to elicit specific hormonal responses that are conducive to weight loss.
Hours and hours of cardio are NOT the answer. You need a program that combines weight training, cardio, low intensity fat burning aerobics and a variety of different exercises to achieve last fat loss!

3) Consistency

It constantly amazes me just how many people put a little effort into their exercise program and expect amazing results instantly. The most well designed and effective programs become totally useless if they are not followed on a consistent basis.
It generally takes around six to eight weeks of consistent exercising and good nutrition to make a noticeable change to your body fat levels and fitness. This means making the effort to follow your program to its utmost, as often as it says to, without thinking "if I just miss a few days I can make it up". Sorry, but it just doesn't work that way.

4) Diet
Finally, you really can't expect to achieve a leaner body if you don't change your unhealthy eating habits. Psychologically speaking though, you shouldn't drop everything "bad" in your diet immediately and exchange it for "good" food. That will probably make you feel miserable and make you revert back to the old, unhealthy habits within a few weeks.
So instead of that, change your eating habits gradually, reduce portion sizes, think about what you are eating and what effect it will have on your body and try to make conscious "good" choices when faced with a variety of different foods.
Your diet should be phased in over a few weeks; unhealthy foods should be dropped from your diet while at the same time introducing healthier foods. Then the transition will be easier to make and a lot easier to maintain for the long term.
